Wear resistance and self-lubrication of electrodeposited Ni-SiC:MoS2 mixed particles composite coatings

Ni-based mixed particles composite coatings were designed to achieve superior wear resistance by combining hard carbides and solid lubricants as a reinforcing mix. Pure nickel single-particles composites electrodeposited in the same conditions for benchmarking. A pre-study was carried out optimise current density avoid loss of process efficiency due hydrogen evolution. The production also improved employing ultrasounds porosity dendritic growth metal caused conductive MoS2 particles. presence led nanocrystallinity matrix, confirmed electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) maps transmission microscopy (TEM). microstructural changes codeposition different correlated microhardness pin-on-disc tests. An extremely high hardness observed (?1110 HV) combined effect nanocrystalline matrix rate (?15 vol% SiC ?8 MoS2). provided self-lubrication capability coating, reducing friction coefficient compared pure Ni from 0.15 0.07. reduced more than 12 times reinforcement 6 Ni-SiC.
